One of the first categories we did for spring cleaning will be the food. It may seem like an easy task, but it is not. After many years of researching and organizing, we still couldn’t find a good way to keep our food in terms of our habits. There is still a time where we get messed up and forget the food we have. Weeks after cleaning it will turn into a mess again. Thus this time we decided to challenge ourselves and do the clean-up again. To make sure we work better, we came out with a list before we get started.
- Take everything out. Food or nonfood, take everything out and put it on your kitchen table and counters. Then wipe those shelves clean! Add shelf paper to make it look nice. This project could take several days.
- Toss it out. Throw away expired, damaged, or foods you no longer eat. If you can’t find an expiration date, toss it. Check StillTasty.com for questions about shelf-life.
- Group similar food items. Organize your food into groups such as: small, canned foods, pasta/rice/potatoes, baking ingredients, breakfast items, spices, beverages, etc.
- Take an inventory. Print out my 2-page Inventory worksheet on my website printables page. Write down what you have and items you need.
- Move unused item. Put holiday items or less used appliances in a closet, the garage, or basement to make room for food in your kitchen. Donate duplicate appliances.
- Corral items. Group items in clear containers, canisters, bins, baskets, or door organizers. Reuse containers you already have. Label containers.
Happy Cleaning!
xoxo, Joe
