Yasai Itame

Last week Don Don Donki open its second outlet at Singapore. And so lucky that it is near my house, thus I and Angela decided to head down for a look. At the vegetable section we straight away pick-up these bean sprouts. It looks so fresh and the price is reasonable, we pick it up without thinking about what to cook.

Due to our busy schedule for work, we almost forget our bean sprouts. However, after a week they still look fresh and crispy. We are so lazy to head back to the market thus we gather the ingredients we have at home and made Yasai Itame, Stir Fry Vegetables. Nobody really uses recipes to make Yasai Itame, thus it is perfect for us. Yes, Yasai Itame is left-over vegetable mishmash or hodgepodge food (a lot of the time anyway).

Typical vegetables used for Yasai Itame are cabbage, onions, bean sprouts. In addition to those, anything is fine.  Pork is the meat often used in the dish, but beef, chicken, or even shrimp will work too.

To enjoy the crispiness of vegetables and avoid water seeping out from veggies, cook fast at high heat.  This is a very quick dish to make, so it is great for weekday dinners.  Yasai Itame could be a wonderful side dish but also works as a main dish if you add more meat (or not).  Our Yasai Itame recipe is very basic, so enjoy changing ingredients as you like.

I put together a list of the things I do when I make stir-fry dishes.  Hope these tips will be helpful if you are new to stir-fry dishes.

  • Prepare all the ingredients and seasonings before you start cooking.  You won’t be able to stop in the middle of the stir-frying process, so don’t try to chop vegetables as you cook.
  • Either wash your ingredients ahead of time or remove the moisture before cooking.  You don’t want to add moisture to the stir-fry dishes otherwise the ingredients get “steamed” and lose their crispiness.
  • Cook thicker and harder vegetables first as they will take a longer time to cook.
  • Keep stirring and tossing so that all the ingredients are evenly cooked.
  • Make sure the rest of your meal is ready to serve or on the table already so that you can enjoy the stir fry dish immediately after cooking.

Ingredients |

  • 1 cup of bean sprouts
  • 1/2 cup of carrots
  • sukiyaki meat (optional)
  • 1/2  cup of onion
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2tbsp of soya sauce
  • pinch of salt and white pepper

Method |

Cut carrot and onion into thin slices. Put oil, and garlic in a wok, and heat at medium heat. After the wok is hot, add pork and fry for a couple of minutes, stirring until brown. Add vegetables, turn to high heat, and cook stirring constantly until vegetable wilt (but do not overcook). Add salt, pepper, soy sauce to taste, mix, and remove from heat to serve.

Make this dish, it’s definitely a show stopper! Take a photo of your version, send us an email, tag us on Instagramtweet us, anything. We love to see you trying out our recipe!

xoxo, Joe
